Le Musée historique d’Abomey est créé en 1944 sous l’administration coloniale.
Il est logé dans le palais du roi Ghézo (1818-1858). Ce Musée dispose d’un patrimoine constitué de plus de 1400 objets qui témoignent de la richesse de la civilisation du royaume du Danxomè qui a évolué pendant trois siècles.
Les collections du Musée :
- Des Bas-reliefs incorporés aux bâtiments et certains découpés, montés en exposition dans une des salles du musée,
- Des objets royaux : trônes royaux, récades, ombrelles, hamacs, parures…
- Des objets d’artisanat de cour : tentures en motifs appliqués polychromes, pagnes, statues allégoriques…
- Des objets rituels : autels portatifs dédiés aux ancêtres, sabres rituels, calebasses d’offrandes…
- Des vêtements : tuniques royales, pagnes d’apparat…
- Des collections d’armes blanches et à feu liées à l’histoire du royaume.
